The opening of the CPLP channel will be activated responsibly, when we are certain of the response capacity", stated António Leitão

As reported by DN Brasil this week, there is still no set date for the option allowing entry into Portugal without a visa and the request for a residence permit under the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) agreement to become operational. According to António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency, "the opening of the CPLP channel will be activated responsibly when we are certain of our capacity to respond," he stated when questioned by DN Brasil on the matter.
The minister participated this Friday (17th) in the grand conference celebrating the 160th anniversary of the Diário de Notícias. During his remarks, he reiterated that immigration of Brazilian citizens and those from other CPLP countries is a priority for the current government. However, he emphasized that the Executive does not want to "repeat past mistakes by opening doors to something hollow," António Leitão Amaro highlighted.
Before enabling CPLP citizens to enter Portugal and request a residence permit, the renewal of documents for those who already hold the permit will take place. "We will assess how we can use the mission structure," the minister mentioned, referring to the mechanism planned for biometric data collection.
António Leitão Amaro expects this process to be completed "within this quarter" or, at the latest, "surely this semester," utilizing the mission structure. Over 150,000 immigrants, most of them Brazilians, will be summoned to attend AIMA service counters, which will operate until summer.
With this renewal, the current A4 paper document will be replaced by a residence permit identical to others, valid for two years and allowing circulation within the Schengen Area. This plan was announced by the current government shortly after taking office last year.
